Agudah, Shas and the WZO

Former Knesset member Menachem Porush, in an interview, says that UTJ has taken money from the WZO for the past twenty years.

He says he regrets the attacks against Shas. His idea, he says, is that Shas should release a statement that they disagree with the Zionist ideals and then even the UTJ can join the WZO as well.

I think that Shas shouldn't (and couldn't) do this for two reasons.

  • They explicitly signed and agreement committing to the ideals.
  • Why should they give the UTJ a chance at the funding, if it dilutes theirs?
I wonder if Gafni's constituency got any of the money, and if they did, what they have to say for themselves.

The Chareidi community has never understood the perspective of the rest of the Jewish world in this matter.
On one hand, they have no hesitation to slander Zionism, declare their dislike of the State, refuse to participate in its defence, etc.
But when that same state cuts the funding to their yeshivos, they shrei gevalt like no one else.
The "you are trief but your money is kosher" attitude wins them no points.

"refuse to participate in its defence"

That starting to crack, if ever so slightly.

"The "you are trief but your money is kosher" attitude wins them no points."

But it does earn them money, like no else can. They were never into 'hasbarah' anyway.

What losses do they have by gaining negative publicity, if the media anyways usually portrays them in a negative light?

Well there's the old saying: Any fame is good fame, right?

The problem isn't in their ability to earn money. Although I'm sure the numbers haven't been calculated, one must wonder: what percentage of the money supporting the "I won't work" lifestyle comes from the door-to-door schnorring, and what percentage comes from the rich aidem?

Because - and this is the important point - all these rich aidems are spending their money on a generation that will not perpetuate that wealth. When it's used up, who will support the grandkids?

Well, it depends. If there's enough money in coffers, then this bit won't destroy the wealth and the aidem will take over the business eventually.

I'm not really worried about the grandkids. Whenever the current system starts breaking down, they'll start going to work. Hopefully it will be gradual, rather than a sudden cut in government allowances.

I don't think it has to "explode".
